Mt. Takao
Mt. Takao
We recommend a visit in October or November, when the leaves are in their autumnal colors.
Even in Tokyo, where skyscrapers line the streets, there are places rich in nature.
This is the Tama area located in the west of Tokyo.
Let us introduce Mt. Takao, which was awarded three stars in the Michelin Guide in 2007
How to go there?
Mt. Takao is a 599-meter-high mountain located in Hachioji City, Tokyo.
The nearest station is Takaosanguchi Station on the Keio Line.
There are several ways to ascend Mt.Takao.
The recommended way is by cable car.
This cable car tracks are the steepest in Japan.
There are also three hiking courses, and you can walk up the mountain in about 1.5 hours.
What to do?
When you reach the summit station of the cable car, let’s go to the observation deck.
The city of Tokyo spreads out before you.
If the weather is fine, you will be able to see the skyscrapers of Shinjuku.
If you are lucky, you may even be able to see Mt.Fuji.
Do you know Tengu?
From the summit station, it is another 30-minute walk to the top of the mountain.
On the way, there is a temple called Yakuoin.
Yakuoin is a Shingon sect temple founded about 1,200 years ago.
It is famous for the legend of the Tengu.
Tengu are legendary creatures in Japan, dressed as mountain priests. They are red-faced, have high noses, and are said to have wings and fly through the air.
The tengu of Mt. Takao is a guardian of the Gohonzon, and is said to bring many blessings, such as good luck and protection from evil spirits.
A statue of a tengu is displayed in Yakuoin Temple.
I would especially recommend November, when the leaves are changing colors.
The cable cars that run through the mountains in red and yellow are fascinating.
Beautiful autumn leaves can also be seen near the top of the mountain.
If it is a clear day, the skyscrapers of Shinjuku can be seen.
